Answers to common questions to help you get started with Tutorspot

For Tutors

How do I become a Tutor?

Click on Become a Tutor, and register with us. It's easy, and doesn't take long. Once you are registered we can put your profile live onto Tutorspot, and you could soon start receiving messages from potential students.

Do I need to have Tutoring experience to register? 

No. We have students who want very experienced Tutors and others who are happy with a new Tutor.

What qualifications do I need to be register as a Tutor? 

A good degree in the subject you want to tutor at A level, and good A levels or above in subjects  for GCSE students and below.

What qualities do I need?

A very good knowledge of the subject/s, plus the exam boards.
A strong commitment to helping your students to do well, and to achieve the best grade they are capable of in their exams, as well as an  innate ability to bond well with the students.

Do I need to prepare for lessons?

Yes. Speak with students before lessons commence if you can, and find out what you need so you can prepare lesson plans.Remember to switch off your mobile phone during lessons and set homework for students.

How many students can Tutorspot provide me with? 

We will work with you to provide you with as many or as few students as you want.

What do I need to do in order to get lots of students? 

Always reply quickly to each message you receive from potential students.
Take time to prepare your profile, highlighting your experience as a tutor and/or teacher, and what makes you a good tutor.
Tell students about successes you have had with previous students

How are lessons booked? 

Send as many messages as you need to. Remember not to give any contact details, or information on where you work in the messages.
Once you both agree dates and times for the lessons, fill in the Lesson Reservation.

When can lessons start?

Lessons can start as soon as the Client has confirmed the Lesson Reservation , and has entered their correct card details.

Can I ever work directly with a student? 

No. We are working together with you, so this is never allowed. All lessons have to be booked and  all payments processed through the Tutorspot website. See clauses 9.8 - 9.12 on Terms and Conditions. If a student does ask you to work with them directly, just let them know you can’t and that they have to book the lessons on Tutorspot.

Can I work with other students as well as with students from Tutorspot? 

Yes, of course.
However, any students who are recommended to you by a current, or recent ( within the past 2 years) Tutorspot student will need to book lessons with you on the Tutorspot website as well.

What rate can I charge? 

Choose a rate that you are confident you are worth i.e. that you have the experience and knowledge to tutor the subject/s and level/s,
Look on our rates system to find what rate you need to put on your profile so you can receive the rate you want.
It’s easy to use. Simply enter a rate, and it will tell you the rate you will receive.
It is best to be sensible about the rates you choose. If it is too high, it could put students off.

What happens if I have to cancel a lesson? 

Tutors can cancel an individual lesson anytime up to the scheduled start time of the lesson, but it must be done through the Tutorspot website.

What if I need to cancel all of the lessons?

If you can no longer tutor a student, then you will need to give 2 weeks notice on the Tutorspot website to cancel a series of lessons that has been booked.
The lessons during the 2 week notice period will have to take place, and 9.10 - 9.12 in our Terms and Conditions will apply.

What happens if a Client/student cancels a lesson? 

Clients can cancel an individual lesson up to 48 hours before the scheduled start time of the lesson, and only through the Tutorspot website. The lesson will not be charged for.
To cancel a series of lessons that have been booked, clients have to give 2 weeks notice, as above.

What happens about lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours?

Clients will be liable to pay for any lessons that are cancelled with less than 48 hours notice. 

You can, however, approve a cancellation if you feel it is appropriate. For example, if the student got ill that day. In that case, let us know, and the Client will not have to pay.

When do I receive payment? 

Payments will be made to you within a reasonable period after each lesson, and you will be able to see on your dashboard when payments have been made.

For Clients and Students 

How do I find a suitable Tutor? 

It's easy. Simply put in the search box the subject you want a Tutor for, then the level, eg GCSE A level IB etc, then your postcode or area.
If you want to have lessons online, simply click the online option.
A list of Tutors will appear. You can read through their profiles, and decide which Tutors you want to send a message to.

How many Tutors can I send messages to? 

As many or as few as you like.
Some people choose to send a message to only one Tutor, and it works well. Other people will send messages to a number of Tutors.

How does a lesson get booked? 

Once you and the Tutor have agreed a start date, and period for the lessons, the Tutor will book a lesson and you will receive the Lesson Reservation, which you need to confirm.

How do I pay for lessons? 

When you confirm the lessons, enter your credit card details, and payment is taken by the Payment Provider straight after each lesson.

Where do lessons take place? 

Lessons can be at your home, or a suitable location that you can decide with the Tutor.

Do I need to be at home when the lesson takes place?

For lessons for students under the age of 18, there needs to be an adult at home.

What happens if I have to cancel a lesson? 

You can cancel an individual lesson up to 48 hours before the scheduled start time of the lesson, but only through the Tutorspot website.
If you cancel a lesson with less than 48 hours notice, then you will be liable to pay the full amount for the lesson. A Tutor may accept your cancellation if he/she wants to, and in that case,
you would not have to pay, as long as it has all been done on the Tutorspot website.
Otherwise payment will be taken.

How do I cancel all of the lessons?

To cancel a series of lessons, you have to give 2 weeks notice through the Tutorspot website and Clauses 9.10 – 9.12 will apply

What happens if a Tutor cancels a lesson? 

Tutors can cancel an individual lesson anytime up to the scheduled start time of the lesson.
If a Tutor can no longer tutor a student, maybe for health reasons, then he/she will need to give 2 weeks notice to cancel a series of lessons that has been booked. The lessons during the 2 week notice period will take place, and 9.12 in our Terms and Conditions will apply.

All cancellations have to be done on the Tutorspot website.

What happens if I am not happy  with a Tutor? 

Let us know within 24 hours of the end of the lesson you are not happy about.

Does Tutorspot vet all of the Tutors on the website? 

Whilst we endeavour to vet Tutors before putting their profiles live onto the site, we cannot guarantee anything. As a precaution, you need to speak with the Tutor, and check their paperwork after lessons have been confirmed and  before the first lesson commences

General FAQs 

How often do lessons take place? 

The Tutor and Client/student can decide how often to have lessons, and for what period. eg weekly for 2 hours from September 2019 - June 2020

Can we speak with each other before the lessons start? 

Yes. Once the Lesson Reservation has been confirmed, we will release contact details of you both to each other.

What happens when lessons have been booked? 

We will give you the contact details. You can then confirm addresses and where the lessons will take place, and lessons can commence.

How is Payment made?

Payments are taken and processed by a Third party Payment Provider, Stripe.You will be able to see payment transactions  on your dashboard.

Can we contact each other directly once lessons have started?

All bookings and communications between Tutors and Clients/students should take place via the Tutorspot website.

What happens if we move house, or change our telephone number?

No problem. Just log in and update your new address and telephone number on the Tutorspot website.
